THis long anticipated sequel to Commander: Europe At War attempts to fill the badly needed gap of turn-based Macintosh war games; a sub genre virtually non-existent. The fine Commander:EAW is a worthy effort and if you can overlook a glaring fault in Commander:NAW, you will enjoy this game as well.
From the game description: 'This installment of the Commander series places the player at the brink of war in the Napoleonic era. Re-write history with the same outstanding gameplay mechanics as Commander: Europe at War, but in a new dynamic setting, complete with amazing graphics and compelling campaigns.'
And herein lies the problem. Commander:NAW is a re-write of Commander:EAW with similar graphics and game play. Unfortunately, whereas Commander:EAW is a pretty good simulation of the strategic war in Europe, Commander:NAW tries to accomplish the same strategic play for what should actually be a TACTICAL simulation. Your suspension of disbelief will take hold when you realize that you are playing on a map of Europe and your artillery has a range of 100-200 kilometers. Examine other unit, place them in historical context, and you will see that you are playing a tactical simulation on what is a strategic map. This type of design is not adequate for a Napoleonic simulation. |
