X-Plane 10.10B9

X-Plane is a realistic and colorful flight simulation game from Laminar Research. It supports 3D terrain and elevation maps, and it includes a powerful physics modeler to simulate various weather conditions, such as rain, thunderstorms, wind shear, turbulence and thermals. The demo version includes scenery for southern California and limits gameplay to five minutes per game.

Librarian Note: Note, this is just a downloader app, the full demo download is much larger.

very smooth and well done.

What's the point of a 10 minute demo in a software calling itself a comprehensive flight simulator? You spend that time already sitting on the runway and figuring out 1/4 of the menus. The endless startup time of the program prohibits more than a 2nd demo run before it gets boring. I even tried 3 times and got in the air somehow (no way to calibrate your joystick appropriately) and was put off again (tried v5 back then) by the over-sensitive controls. You have to buy it to figure out if X-Plane is for you or not (it's not for me). The demo is just plain pointless. Not to mention that the company doesn't come off very nicely, boldly assuming that all the MSFS crowd is jumping ship because ACES got fired on their homepage. Less blabber about that and more chance to see if it's really better would be more convincing. All the marketroid blabber and bragging about FAA certificates trying to blow dust in the eyes of people who don't really know what a FTD is or what FAR is doesn't make the bad impression any better.

Beta 17, This major release pushes a lot of work onto the video card and so the performance has become more a driver issue than in previous releases. In a move that some will find really dumb, PPC and Intel machines cannot be networked together. On balance this major release will drag x-plane into the future, but it is far from Final release, even in x-plane terms. New ways to build custom instruments and controls, pretty new water, try the demo before you buy.

This is the first public beta of the next major version of X-Plane. It may be a while before it is a full release. DVDs are already on sale. N.B. your old X-plane 8 DVD will not work as a copyright key, so you will only get 10 minutes of Demo time. Don't download unless you like playing with prerelease software.
