Depths of Peril 1.012

Depths of Peril is a single player action RPG with strong strategy elements. You play as a faction leader protecting the barbarian city, Jorvik, by destroying threatening monsters and completing quests. At the same time, you compete with rival factions to see who will rule the city. Barbarians choose their leaders by fighting to the death!

As a faction leader, you must deal with rival factions through diplomacy, trade, and in time, war. Between battles and raids against other barbarian factions, you build the most powerful faction possible, to withstand your enemies. Building the power of a faction involves exploring a fantasy world, slaying dangerous monsters, solving quests for the city, avoiding deadly traps, and plundering loot to share within your faction.

But in this world, actions actually have consequences, so take care. Annoying the powerful and aggressive Legion of Fear faction will cause them to declare war and destroy you. Ignored Orc uprisings in the Black Forest will cause even more trouble. Protect ally covenants that are being raided, because friends are hard to come by.

* Unique blend of action RPG with strategy elements
* Leader of one warring faction fighting for supremacy
* Must navigate relationships with enemy factions using diplomacy, trade, war, and raids
* Real and hard consequences from a living world
* Breathing, evolving world
* A deep wellspring of history (40+ short stories, 60,000+ words)
* Random, seamless world

Mac Games Rating Den (8/19/2010 - version 1.012)
This is a great game. Kind of a cross between Civ and Diablo. You have a lot of different things to manage as Barbarian/hopeful leader of the town. First you are busy taking quests, fighting monsters, leveling up and gaining recruits to your faction. But at a certain point you are also trying to trade with/appease/fight other factions, so you have a lot to watch, and strategize about. The tutorial was very helpful, and I like that it is not insanely difficult--it is relatively easy to fine-tune the difficulty. Nice effects, and the game starts quickly and is very stable. The music gets a bit repetitive after a while. A very good value. Recommended.

Not a real RPG, adventure maybe, but not an RPG... gameplay will satisfy those who like linear and not very in depth story. Graphics is average.

Have only done a few quests so far. interesting gameplay. Honestly the graphics are a little painful on the eye, but there's something to it when you see a AI controlled character going at your targets, or you steal their own drops while they're fighting etc. :) Strangely, this runs better on the MacBook under OS X than the XP version under Windows XP (hwhich is native.. right?). Definitely worth a testing round !

I played the demo and was quite intrigued. Seemed gameplay seemed to be a mix of Diablo II and World of Warcraft. So, I bought it. Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as great as I was hoping. Essentially you need to be the last one standing in your city, Jorvik. Oddly though - you have to kill the other people in YOUR village - that just seems really strange. Once you do that - you can take all your gear, tombs, artifacts, etc. with you to the next round. You basically have to do the same thing over again, only the outside world changes up a little bit and gets more difficult. The quests to change, but mainly only in what they say, not what you really have to do. The game is flexible for how challenging you want it to be - that is a plus. There are a couple other strange parts to the game. There are little warp posts, usually one in each outside "square" area. You can also create a portal at any time and go back to the village. Unlike Diablo II, the portals are free and never run out. It's not bad if you want some fun. Pretty good graphics for not even being 100mb. Runs great on my MacBook 2.0 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.

this is might be the end of the free RPG mac game hunt. all it needs it online multiplayer capabilities, and a bigger city, without the politics, for that multiplayer thingy. but you could take a friend into the politic world.
